With just few months remaining, it is time to fasten your seat belts and press on the accelerator to speed up the preparation. In respect of those students who passed their Board exam for the first time in 2012, the eligibility criteria for joining any of the IITs or ISM Dhanbad will be 60% marks in their 12th Board or equivalent (55% for SC/ST/PD candidates). For those candidates who appear in their Board exams for the first time in 2013, the eligibility criteria will remain ‘top 20 percentile of the successful candidates’ in their Boards, category-wise. This will be a one-time exception for JEE (Advanced) 2013 only.

For those students who passed their 12th Board exams in 2012 but are re-appearing in the 2013 Board exams with a view to improve their performance, 60% rule will apply if they use their 2012 Board exam results and ‘top 20 percentile’ rule will apply if they use their 2013 Board exam results. This too will be a one-time exception for JEE (Advanced) 2013 only.

Even for all Foreign Nationals, the eligibility criteria based on the qualifying examination shall be 60% aggregate marks.

Before talking about how to prepare for the IIT-JEE entrance examination, it is very  important to know details of the exam. According to the new pattern, people who want to appear for IITs should be among the top 20% achievers in their board exam, and the weightage will be considered as per caliber. It is considered as the starting point of the filtration of your performance.

New pattern in IIT-JEE :

Next, you have two important exams:

1. JEE- Main
2. JEE-Advanced

JEE-Main for the admission of B.E/B.Tech will be held in two ways.

1. Online.
2. Offline.

JEE-Main for the admission of B.Arch./Planning will be offline only. According to the official announcement, students will be shortlisted after attending JEE-Main exam, and it would be based on weightage in their intermediate examination or equivalent board in their state, obviously 40%.

Pattern of JEE-Main 2013 (B.Tech / B.E):

1. JEE-Main will consist of one objective type question paper, and it will test the students with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
2. Duration of the paper will be three hours.

Pattern of JEE-Main 2013 (B.Arch. / Planning):

1. B.Arch./Planning students will have one paper and it will test the students with Mathematics, Aptitude and Drawing.
2. Duration is three hours.

•   1, 50,000 of top performers in JEE-Main will only qualify for appearing JEE-Advanced examination. It includes all categories of students.

Next, immediate step after the successful completion of JEE-Main exam is that all the eligible students are required to register in jeeadv.iitd.ac.in to appear for JEE-Advanced. There will be a fee of 1800 for the students other than SC, ST, PD and the remaining will have to pay 900 only.

Note: “No fee for female candidates. “

JEE-Advanced examination pattern:

1. Exam will be offline.
2. You have to attempt two objective question papers with separate sections for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
3. Their main focus is on comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability.
4. Exam duration is three hours.

Admissions in IITs are based on All India Rank in their JEE-Advanced exam, and that student must be among top 20% successful students of their Board. If you are really enthusiastic and committed towards education, then it looks very easy for you to achieve a rank in IIT-JEE entrance examination.

Now I’m going to propose you some useful information through which you will get a chance to enter your favourite IIT’s. Remember one thing, “nothing is impossible in this world.” If you start preparing for the exam which is half-a-year away with the proper planning, then it is not a difficult task to crack IIT rank. People should focus mainly on solving numerical problems appear in Maths, Physics and Chemistry by considering the time because time places very crucial part in IIT exam. The more you practice, the lesser time you require for a problem. 

 Tips to be followed to achieve rank in IIT:

1. Prepare from the best books on all the three subjects.
2. Plan a daily timetable which should have equal distribution of a number of hours to each subject.
3. Always start from basics because “without base, there will be no roof.”
4. Start your preparation with 40-80 numerical problems daily in all the subjects and get your doubts clarified on the very next day by your tutor.
5. Give yourself the time for solving questions and check your performance status for the better assessment.
6. Create some time for analyzing formulae and theoretical concepts.
7. Discuss the concepts with the like-minded students. (Sharing the knowledge will let you gain more and more).
8. Revise previous year papers while solving questions. (After the daily work)
9. If you are capable of achieving your daily limit then you should have to increase it further.
10.  Try to understand the problem with a conceptual approach before you start solving it.
11.  Try to think out-of-box. It improves your logical thinking.
12.  Prepare yourself as if you have exam tomorrow. Never give up.
13.  Start with tougher concepts with the help of notes or material or with the guidance of your teacher.
14.  Estimate yourself, whether you are really doing well with all the three subjects or only constrained to one. Plan a strategy and start improvising those subjects by allotting enough time.
15.  In order to get a seat in IIT-JEE entrance examination, we are not supposed to spoil our health right? Sleep at least 5-6 hours and avoid late-night reading, instead wake up early in the morning.
16.  Be confident in every aspect. Never, ever lose your confidence.

Tips for the examination:

1. First complete the questions that you are confident about. It avoids wastage of time.
2. First find the questions which hold more marks. Instead of targeting the two 5 marks questions which take more time when compared to one 10 mark question. Solving a 10 mark question with lesser time will eventually save your time.
3. Divide the problem into sub-problems, think how you can reach that intermediate step, and then solve the problem.
4. Don’t be frustrated or tensed, read questions carefully, and apply an approach, then write the solution; else there might be a chance of doing mistakes.
5. If you know anything in the paper, then solve it.
6. Finally, All the best for your exam.

JEE (main) scores and marks obtained in physics, chemistry and mathematics during the Class XII examination would be given 50 per cent weightage each. Students, however, will have to secure 50 per cent aggregate in Class XII to be eligible for the entrance.

Marks of students from across boards — CBSE, ICSE and HSC — would be calculated on the basis of the normalised percentile system developed by Indian Statistical Institute.

“The Maharashtra government will give 50 per cent weightage each to marks obtained in the Class XII and entrance exams,” said Minister for Higher and Technical Education Rajesh Tope.

Standardized tests across all boards in India

There has been lot of activity in education space recently that directly affects students studying in 11th standard and 12th standard. First, it was about the pattern of IIT JEE and AIEEE and weightage to 12th boards marks for these exams, affecting over 15 Lakh students out of 25 Lakh students that appear for 12th board. Now, a common entrance test (JEE Main and JEE Advanced) will replace the old pattern for IIT JEE and AIEEE. Similarly, medical students had to face lot of confusion with introduction of common medical entrance test called NEET. The main purpose for these changes was to move towards common tests for entrance to engineering and medical schools

Here is another step that will further help in moving towards “one nation one test” philosophy. All education boards across the country have agreed to standardize examinations at the school level. What this means is that all the 29 boards will have a similar structure and pattern for school level exams. The questions, however, will be different.

With consideration of 12th board marks in selection process for IITs and NITs and other centrally funded institutions, there were lot of doubts how the results will be normalized across boards. Now with the similar standardized tests across boards, the evaluation system would be more balanced. It should be noted that from year 2013, for selection to IITs would require a student to be in top twenty percentile in the respective board. While for selection to NITs, the 12th boards marks would carry 40% weightage in the evaluation criteria.

IIT JEE 2013 Dates

The Joint Admission Board (JAB) of IIT have approved the JEE Advanced on June 2, 2013 and approved the JEE Mains entrance test on April 7, 2013 which was decided by other stakeholders including CBSE, Centrally funded technical institutes and representatives of IITs.

IIT JEE Advanced will be held by IIT-JAB while JEE Mains will be conducted by the CBSE with representatives from IIT and other Centrally Funded institutes on board.

The pattern of IIT JEE Advanced will be similar to that of IIT JEE 2012 with two papers and question from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. As we reported earlier, 1,50,000 students will be selected from JEE Main to appear for JEE Advanced.

Last year more than 5 Lakh students appeared for IIT JEE. This year the number of students appearing for JEE Mains might go up to 15 Lakh because of single test for IITs, NITs and other centrally funded institutes.

There is gap of almost two months between JEE Main and JEE advanced. Although it is not known yet when the results of JEE Main would be declared. The gap between JEE Main and Advanced should give enough time to students to be mentally prepared for JEE advanced.

Another interesting thing is that JEE advanced is going to be objective type and not subjective type as IITs prefer. This might be because of more number of students appearing for JEE advanced: 1,50,000 can be logistically nightmare to evaluate if questions are subjective. Earlier, some IITs requested this number to be changed to 50,000 students so that they can conduct subjective type test.

Earlier, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) accepted the percentile based formula for JEE 2013. According to this only top 20 percentile students from respective boards would be eligible for JEE advanced.

JEE advanced will be held in two shifts and would test the students with problem solving in Physics, Chemistry  and Mathematics. This would be similar to last year. The total duration of the shifts would be 6 hours. Another thing to note is that JEE advanced will be conducted by IITs.
