KVPY: Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana Scholarship Program

For many of you, Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) might be unknown until now. So to begin with, KVPY is a Scholarship Program initiated by The Department of Science & Technology, GoI, administered by Indian Institute of Science to encourage budding enthusiasts in the field of science and research. Clearing this recognized test is itself an indication of one’s brilliance.

KVPY entitles students to receive scholarships up to the pre-PhD level. Fellowships awarded ranges from Rs.4000 to 7000 per month. Further being a part of this program is a ticket for summer programs organized by some of the prestigious and well known institutes in the country. Not only does the student get to attend the summer programs, but can also have access labs,
libraries, museums etc.

Eligibility criteria for KVPY:

Students who have completed class 10 and class 12 are eligible for the scholarship program. There are 3 streams in all – basic sciences (SA/SB/SX), SP (Basic Science) and SP (Medicine).
Based on every student’s educational qualification, he/she can choose a particular stream.

Stream Basic Science (SA) – Students who have scored a minimum of 80% in mathematics and science in their Class 10 Board exams and have chosen the science stream in Class 11 are eligible to be a part of this stream.

Stream Basic Science (SB) – students of Class 12 who would be willing to pursue their B. Sc are eligible, provided they have secured a minimum of 80% in mathematics and science in their Class 10 Board exams.

Stream Basic Science (SX) – This is for students who have enrolled for their 1st year of graduation. The eligibility criterion is that the student must have scored a minimum of 60% in aggregate in Science and Mathematics in their Class 12 Board Exams.

SP (Basic Science) – this is for students who are in class 11/12 or graduation (B.Sc/ B.S/ B.E/B.Tech/ B.Arch) 1st/2nd year. The minimum score required is 60% aggregate in class 10 and 12 Board Exams.

SP (Medicine) – students who have enrolled for I/II year professional course such as MBBS, BDS, BVSc, B.Pharma and have scored 60% in Class 12 Board Exams are eligible for the program.

Selection process:

For Basic Science (SB, SA, SX), there’s an aptitude test, which the students will have to clear, followed by a personal interview which is the final stage in the selection process. For SP (Basic Science) and SP (Medicine), student has to submit a project report exclusively for this application. The judges/committee look for the student’s individual creativity, originality and interest and their selection process is based on these criteria. Short-listed candidates will be called for an interview.

Syllabus:

There is no prescribed syllabus since KVPY aims at testing a student’s interest and general knowledge.
