There is a possibility that 12th board marks weightage will be dropped out of the new JEE pattern (common entrance test - ‘one nation – one exam’) for IITs and other centrally funded institutes. Though 12th marks can still be an eligibility criteria for writing the test – as it is used currently.
Although this is not confirmed yet, this would be a big relief for majority of students if this happens.
The other possibility is that MHRD can soften its stand on keeping JEE main and JEE advanced on the same day. This would reduce some stress among students. IITs might also get independence in fixing the date for JEE advanced. It was reported earlier that JEE advance will be set and managed by IITs and 50,000 students “filtered” after considering 12th board marks (50% weightage) and JEE main (50% weightage) would be contesting for the IIT seats. This 50% weightage for 12 board marks can go away completely now.
Another major face-off between IITs and MHRD (read Kapil Sibal) is about the year this exam should be introduced. Many feel that 2013 is too early to introduce the exam as students are already halfway in their IIT preparation and the modalities for exam have not been decided yet. On the other hand, Mr. Sibal wants to hold it starting 2013.
